How to Make Your Fresh Flowers Last Longer at Home

Posted on February 16 2026

There’s nothing better than bringing home a fresh bouquet — the colour, the scent, the instant lift it gives a room.

But one of the questions we get asked the most is:

“How do I make my flowers last longer?”

The good news? A few simple steps can make a big difference.

1. Trim the Stems (Yes, Even If We’ve Already Done It!)

Before placing your flowers in a vase, trim about 1–2cm off the stems at a 45-degree angle.

Why?

  • It increases the surface area for water absorption

  • It prevents stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase

  • It gives your flowers a fresh drink after being out of water

Pro tip: Re-trim every 2–3 days to keep them happy.

2. Remove Any Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves sitting in water quickly cause bacteria to build up — and bacteria is the main reason flowers fade faster.

Make sure:

  • No foliage is below the water

  • The water stays clear

  • You change the water every 2–3 days

Clean water = longer-lasting blooms.

3. Keep Flowers Away from Heat & Direct Sunlight

It might look lovely on a sunny windowsill, but heat makes flowers open faster — and fade faster.

Avoid placing your bouquet near:

  • Radiators

  • Fireplaces

  • Direct sunlight

  • Fruit bowls (yes, really — ripening fruit releases gases that age flowers quicker!)

4. Use the Flower Food (It Really Works!)

That little sachet isn’t just an extra — it contains:

  • Nutrients to feed the blooms

  • Something to keep the water clean

  • A sugar source for energy

Mix it with fresh water and stir well before adding your flowers.

5. Remove Wilting Stems Promptly

If one stem starts to fade, remove it.

This keeps your arrangement looking fresh and prevents bacteria spreading to other stems.
